Auguste Clape Offer

Whenever Cornas comes to mind, so does Auguste Clape. This is the leading estate in Cornas and one of the top names in the Rhone Valley. The wines are in a class of their own with an inimitable intensity and richness as well as great charm and depth of flavour.
Whilst many of the younger, more profit-minded wine makers have tried to extend the boundaries of the Cornas appellation and increase the permitted yield of the vines, Auguste Clape has strongly resisted their proposals, continually defending the quality and good name of Cornas. In his fifties, Monsieur Clape went back to school to study viticulture at Beaune. He learned and accepted many of their theories, but refused to accept the "new oak" philosophy, keeping to his traditionalist standpoint. He agrees that the Syrah needs to be aged in wood to allow it to loosen up and age steadily, but fervently insists that his wines do not need wood tannins, and therefore the wood used must be neutral. He continues in his traditionalist philosophy that the expression of terroir is the most important factor when looking to make a great wine, and that the use of new oak masks and modifies the identity of the terroir. For Auguste Clape's purposes, the use of older oak barrels is paramount.
Traditionalist he may be, but Monsieur Clape is in no way outdated. He is constantly experimenting in his cellar with new ideas and concepts that might improve his wine. He has amassed a wealth of winemaking knowledge and has become one of the very rare winemakers in the Rhône, along with Chave and Guigal, who are now capable of making a good wine every year, no matter the vintage. Over the past few years he has acquired a following of ardent supporters from all over the world, fanatical about his wines, but the friendly Monsieur Clape remains extremely modest and unpretentious, always interested and ready to accept other people's viewpoints.
In 1989 Monsieur Clape was joined by his son Pierre-Marie, who shares the enthusiasm and winemaking philosophy of his father. He should guarantee the continuation of this great winemaking property for the years to come.
Without hesitation, Domaine Clape is a leader in the Nothern Rhône, the best grower in Cornas and one of the finest producers in all of France.

Auguste Clape Cornas 2004
There are always two cuvees of Cornas, and like some of the most traditional producers I taste, the wines are often better out of bottle than the barrel and/or foudre samples. That is the case with 2004, where both wines revealed significantly more flavor and intensity than they did last year. The 2004 Cornas, which is essentially a selection of their older vines, has zesty acidity, an opaque purple color, full-bodied power, and wonderful sweet blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with some smoke, scorched earth, and new saddle leather. It’s a beauty, rich, full, and while accessible, it promises to last for 12-15 years. Wine Advocate # 170 92 Points Drink: 2007 - 2022

$189.00

Auguste Clape Cornas 2005
The 2005 Cornas reveals fabulous aromas of acacia flowers, scorched earth, blackberries, dense cherries, and damp forest floor. Full-bodied with high tannin, but equally high extraction and richness, patience will be required for purchasers of this superb Cornas. Wine Advocate # 175 92 Points Drink: 2012 - 2020
Price:
$186.00
Quantity:
Auguste Clape Cornas 2006
The full-bodied, concentrated 2006 Cornas offers up scents of hot bricks, blackberries, cherries, acacia flowers, meat, and pepper. It is a classic Cornas that appears to be more accessible and forward than the 2005. Wine Advocate # 175 (91-93) Points
Price:
$198.00
Quantity:
Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance 2005
The dense purple-colored 2005 Cornas Renaissance reveals dry, hard tannins, some meatiness, red and black fruits, a touch of violets, and a broodingly backward personality. Give it 2-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 15. Wine Advocate # 175 89+ Points Drink: 2010 - 2025
Price:
$137.00
Quantity:
Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance 2006

Auguste Clape Cotes du Rhone 2006
The 2006 Cotes du Rhone, a Syrah made just outside Cornas, exhibits plenty of scorched earth and black fruit characteristics in its medium-bodied, pure, natural personality. Both of these reds should be drunk in their exuberant youth, 1-3 years after the vintage. Wine Advocate # 178 88 Points
