Dominus, Napa Valley 2003
The 2003 Dominus has turned out even better than I thought from barrel. There are 4,800 cases of this 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot blend. A big, sweet nose of roasted coffee, Provencal herbs, black currants, cherry jam, plums, allspice, and forest floor is followed by a spicy, rich, full-bodied, fragrant, intense wine. The tannins are sweet, but noticeable in this beautifully complex, strikingly aromatic 2003. It has much more similarity to a great Bordeaux than anything from Napa Valley.Wine Advocate # 162 95 Points Drink: 2007 - 2025

Sean Thackrey Aquila 2002 (Sangiovese)
This Sangiovese comes from the famous Eaglepoint Ranch in Medocino, which is on the coast north of San Francisco. These wines represent a different view of the grape and are at once varietal and Californian at the same time. You will be struck by the richness, classic Thackrey spice and menthol, with very fine characters like mocha, cedar, fig, prune, allspice and earth. Medium to full bodied and carrying a warmth of alcohol just on 15%. Both vintages were considered good to excellent, and are aging beautifully. “this is as good as Sangiovese can get in California”, Robert Parker

Sean Thackrey Devil’s Gulch Ranch Andromeda 2007 (Pinot Noir)
This wine comes from the Devil’s Gulch Vineyard in Marin County (in northern California, wedged between Sonoma County to the north and the San Pablo Bay to the south). This wine has the Thackrey stamp, carrying substantial weight in black fruits and spice, with menthol and varietal characters entwined. This is a powerful wine, which may remind some of Waipara or Otago in weight. It works as a rich Californian style, though it’s a harmonious example of Pinot Noir through and through
Sean Thackrey, Orion 2008
This honestly labeled Californian Native Red Wine is a collector’s item, and one of the hardest wines to find in the US. It never helps that Robert Parker regularly scores this cuvee 98+, and it’s also one of the rare wines that seems to receive dual acclamation from both Parker and many anti-Parker voices. At its heart, this is a field-blend red based on Petit Syrah, Syrah and Zinfandel from a co-planted vineyard of many varieties in the Napa Valley. It is an incredible, monolithic wine that forces you to reconsider what you understand to be the boundaries of taste and flavour. This is not to say there’s anything overly extracted, oaky or clumsy, almost the complete opposite. This is a study in ever changing power, opening up to reveal layer after layer of black fruits, sweet spice, bay leaf and mint, pepper, and a baker’s shop of sweet/savory complexity. It is undeniably a big wine, carrying alcohol, glycerol and fruit-sweetness through the palate, but it is completely balanced.

Sean Thackrey, Pleiades XVIII NV
A non-vintage winery blend, made with the express purpose of providing delight. This is still no shrinking violet. Medium bodied, fine yet warm, with lovely aromatics and body that defy the concepts of varietal. The label says it all “…to delight the jaded, offend the Wine Police and go well with anything red wine goes well with.”

Sean Thackrey, Sirius (Petite Sirah) 2005
This is the wine, the Sirius (also from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Medocino), which really a wine of excitement. It’s because this style of Petit Sirah is truly unique and we simply cannot make wines like this in Australia. It’s all about contained power- both of these wines are black, mouth coating and unctuous. They are also incredible complex, fine, multi layered and faceted wines. They will reward patience but also offer something special when young.
