BORDEAUX 2010
The Story so far… Though still in barrel, reviews indicate first and foremost that 2010 is an excellent Vintage. Certainly a different expression of Bordeaux than has previously been seen in recent times, which in itself is welcomed from the perspective of cellar diversity and enjoyment. We do know that back in September, vintage conditions presented selection tables with superb quality fruit. Subsequent vinification has produced vins of great exuberance, of aromatic and fruit driven highs, similar to 09, but showing greater refinement, reflecting more breed as well as having similar structural qualities of the 05s. This was borne out in our in store En Primeur Tasting 16th April 2011. We see it as a superior ‘Classic’ styled vintage that should suit investors and enthusiasts alike.
Appellation Overview: Outstanding efforts in Graves, Margaux and Pomerol. Arguably the quantity of 'hits' in 05 out number than in 10 but the 'hits' in 10 hit harder!
Graves: Whites are superstar stand outs - balanced high acids with ripe fleshed fruits. The Graves 'terroir' seems suited to the Vintage conditions.
Margaux: Lock and load on Margaux in 2010! The lighter, sandier terrain lapped up what nature presented. Generously fruited wines, with the trademark Margaux perfume and charming tannins, without excessive alcohols. Pavillon Blanc a gem! The 2010 Rauzan Gassies we cracked in store was, for a somewhat under acheiver in the past, well... made us sit up and pay attention - the wine shows all the hallmarks one could hope for in a Margaux vin - this gives some insight to the higher end! In 2010 Margaux has finally found it's true self!
Pomerol: Some late picking issues here however where the right decisions were made, some beautiful perfumed vins to be found. Those who strived for excellence, found it - Vieux Chateau Certan, La Conseillante, Petrus and Le Pin. At our En Primeur tasting in store CLOS VIEUX TAILLEFER, a single patch of 40 year old Merlot vines grown on sandier soil with clay underneath. showed lightness and ease, classic plums and violets, round and soft with velvet like glide - could drink it now!
Pauillac: The best are contenders to knock off 05/09s equivalents - but there were some under acheivers.Latour looks like vin of the Vintage. Some wines lack charm. Talk in many circles of a very successful Vintage for Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Pontet Canet continues it's run, so to Lynch Bages.
St Estephe: Quite an emphasis on structure, not surprisingly.Cos back down to earth from the monterious 09. Be selective here.
St Julien: A truly great Vintage for St J' - Usual suspect over acheivers - Ducru, Branaire, Beychevelle (continues it's climb!), Gruaud and the 2 Barton vins excelled - 2010 in St J looks like surpassing 82,90, 00,05 & 09!
St Emilion: As a generalsation, some stewy Merlots as a result of late picking, although the classics performed true to form. Cheval Blanc, Canon. Figeac.
