Niepoort Redoma Branco 2009
The 2009 REDOMA BRANCO is a typical old vines (40-80 years) Douro white blend of grapes like Codega, Rabigato, Donzelinho, Viosinho and Arinto, aged for 8 months in French oak casks. The oak is a little noticeable at first here, but the wine goes right to the fruit and acidity. There is some bite on the finish. I loved the bright, sunny demeanor and its grace and charm, plus its persistence on the finish. The longer it airs out, the more the fruit and acidity comes through. Mark Squires

Niepoort Sempar Tinto 2008
Intense red fruit and spice teams with a typical Douro schist stony character. The palate is vibrant and appealing, with bright fruit, juicy tannins and good acidity that extends the back palate. The Spanish Acquisition

Niepoort Tiara Branco 2009
The 2009 TIARA is a blend of Codega, Rabigato, Donzelinho, Viosinho, Cercial and others from old vines (40 -100 years) and a high altitude vineyard (600+ meters) that spent 8 months in stainless steel. Aged on the lees, it had no maloactic fermentation. Not surprisingly, even in the sometimes big and fat ’09 vintage, this is crisp and steely, another in a line of increasingly interesting Tiaras. It is also remarkably elegant, again, notwithstanding the vintage. Depending on what style you want—trocken Riesling lovers and Chablis fanciers take note—this may well become your favorite Niepoort bottling. Mark Squires

Niepoort Vertente Tinto 2008
The 2008 VERTENTE is a typical Douro blend, including grapes like Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela and others aged 18 months in French oak. It is another Niepoort old vines product, with the blend of vineyards and vines ranging from 20-70 years. It is also a typical ’08, fresh and bright, succulent on the finish, with a little bit of a hard edge at the moment. The oak is a bit too prominent, but this promises to be a very successful Vertente when it settles down. Elegant but intense, deliciously fruity but ageworthy, this is usually a pretty good value pick in Niepoort’s lineup, but perhaps more so this year than in most. This year’s version is beautifully structured and should hold very well, although it will be approachable young. Drink now-2020. Mark Squires

Quinta do Noval 10 Year Old Tawny
Quinta do Novel's 10 Year Old Tawny exhibits a light ruby/garnet color, sweet jammy fruit, nice spice, cedar and smoke in the nose, and good concentration. Tawny ports are aged in wood from essentially a solera system for the number of years indicated on the bottle. In most cases I prefer the younger ten or twenty year Tawnys to the ancient forty to fifty year old wines, but it is really a matter of taste. I tend to like more fruit rather than the oxidized and aged characteristics of the very old tawnys. Wine Advocate # 107 88 Points
