The richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens with an unmistakable Ginestra nose of menthol, eucalyptus, spices and minerals. It is dense and structured, showing plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, licorice, tar and toasted oak flavors, with exceptional length and substance on the palate, and closing with an inviting, beautiful, lingering finish that makes you want to come back to the wine time and again. Clerico’s Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producer’s most representative wine. The 1999 Barolo Per Cristina demonstrates the clear superiority of this vintage compared to 2000 – Ciabot Mentin Ginestra is Clerico’s best vineyard, but this year Per Christina his best wine. Very ripe on the nose, but with a freshness and vigor which make it seem like a very young wine indeed, its aromas of raspberry, anisette, and chocolate are accompanied by a powerhouse palate, very creamy and sensual in texture, strong and long with firm and caressing tannins and an explosive but sweet finish. The 2000 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a thing of beauty. This mid-weight, delicate red offers up a gorgeous array of crushed flowers, red berries and sweet spices in an ethereal style. As it sits in the glass the wine acquires concentration and richness. The wine possesses the grace of a ballerina, phenomenal balance and impeccable pedigree. In this vintage the Amarone shows suggestions of slightly newer barrels, but readers in search of fine old-school Amarone won’t find a better wine among this year’s new releases.
