Chateau Pierre-Bise 'Les Rouannieres' Anjou Villages Rouge 2014
Dark and spicy black fruits here, fresh and lifted but with a very firm depth. Forest fruits, black cherry especially. Good substance on the palate, round and attractive, but with a good backbone of tannin. A drier structure showing in the finish and a creamed fruit character. Very ripe and almost chewy tannic core. Lots of lively acidity too. An attractive dark character, beautifully composed but with a very robust backbone to it. WINEDOCTOR

The Chotard family have been making wine for over 200 years and this year in fact the reigns were passed to Daniels’ son Simon, the latest in the dynasty. Wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. After 8 months, the wine is transferred to tank for 3 to 5 months and then 3 to 5 months in bottle. Total aging is 14 to 18 months. Coulee de Serrant 2011
Big, tannic, and intense, this ’11 Coulée de Serrant shows the ripeness of its vintage in its depth and power. Offering tremendous complexity and considerable balance, this wine explodes with ripe orchard fruit laid atop a firm foundation of minerals and sprinkled with fresh-cut herbs. Showing a touch of bitter almond at the finish, this elegant, profound wine needs some time to mellow, integrate its components, and come into its own. Deriving from the most famous of the Joly holdings, a 17-acre steeply sloped monopole of Chenin Blanc vines averaging 40 years old, with some as old as 80; its soil is almost pure red schist. The Coulée de Serrant is the flagship wine of the estate, one that essentially created the cult of Nicolas Joly. Like Nicolas himself, we suggest thoroughly decanting this wine for optimum enjoyment.
