Domaine Leflaive Monthelie 1er Cru 2009
Sur La Velle is one of the best 1er Crus in Monthélie, effectively the continuation of the famous Volnay 1er Cru, Clos des Chênes. On the nose, notes of bright cherry, raspberry and a little spice are immediately evident. On the palate, the tannins are supple and the fruit is rich, vibrant and intense. There is a rawness to the wine at this stage, showing its youth, but after another winter in barrel and a year or two in bottle, it promises to be quite exquisite. Drink from 2012.

Maison Bouchard Père et Fils, Monthelie Champs Fulliot 2005
More subtle and better integrated wood (though it's not invisible) sets off the dark berry and cassis suffused nose that merges into richer, fuller yet finer flavors that possess the same excellent volume if perhaps a touch less power and punch, all wrapped in a firm and chewy finish.
