The 2004 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, and 5% Graciano aged for 26 months in French and American oak. Made in a traditional style, it is already beginning to show aromatic complexity from its extended aging. Cedar, leather, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and blackberry lead to a rich, elegant, plush wine in the style of the superb 2004 vintage. Descendientes de Jose Palacios Petalos 2009
The new releases (all 100% Mencia) include the entry-level 2009 Petalos del Bierzo sourced mainly from leased vineyards with vine age ranging from 40-90 years. It was aged for a few weeks in new French barriques followed by 6-10 months in seasoned barrels. It shows lovely density and purity in an up-front style. Dark black cherries, violets, and Asian spices perch on a medium-bodied frame with well integrated oak and an elegant personality. A Bordeaux Blend consisting of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 7% Malbec. Oaked for 12 months in a combination of new and 2nd fill French oak, this wine is rich with dark berry flavours and spice. The wine has a full, smooth finish that shows a lovely tannin structure, a few years in the cellar would certainly not hurt this wine.
