Sean Thackery - Wine Maker

As many of your know, we've a passion for exploring the path less travelled, crusading our way through some of the world's most interesting and controversial wines. Sean Thackery has been on our radar for some time and the culmination of favourable planetary alignements has now brought him into our orbit. Sean is the 'natural' winemaker protagonist State side and it's an enormous privilage and honour to be able to Offer his wines in Australia.

Many of you may have seen Sean on Oz Clarkes & James May, Big Wine Adventure featured on SBS recently. After numerous customer requests we thought it time to introduce his creations here. We contacted Sean and have worked with an importer to bring these illuminating wines to our Shores for the first time. Apart from our offering, they will only be listed with a small number of selected Three Hat restaurants.

Even in the liberal ferment of creativity that is central California, Sean is a man of arrestingly unique philosophies. He has never undertaken formal winemaking training, and draws more inspiration from his art history degree when making his wines.  His opinionated, and controversial, thoughts are at once incredibly progressive, yet welcome scepticism. He has a following of devout wine collectors worldwide that ensure his wines are almost impossible to find.

We could write in further detail about Sean and barely scratch the surface of his philosophies and ideas, so, it’s worth watching this video that delves more into Sean’s mind http://www.chow.com/stories/11546

Sean Thackrey, Orion 2008 MAGNUM 1.5L
This honestly labeled Californian Native Red Wine is a collector’s item, and one of the hardest wines to find in the US. It never helps that Robert Parker regularly scores this cuvee 98+, and it’s also one of the rare wines that seems to receive dual acclamation from both Parker and many anti-Parker voices. At its heart, this is a field-blend red based on Petit Syrah, Syrah and Zinfandel from a co-planted vineyard of many varieties in the Napa Valley. It is an incredible, monolithic wine that forces you to reconsider what you understand to be the boundaries of taste and flavour. This is not to say there’s anything overly extracted, oaky or clumsy, almost the complete opposite. This is a study in ever changing power, opening up to reveal layer after layer of black fruits, sweet spice, bay leaf and mint, pepper, and a baker’s shop of sweet/savory complexity. It is undeniably a big wine, carrying alcohol, glycerol and fruit-sweetness through the palate, but it is completely balanced.

Sean Thackrey, Sirius (Petite Syrah) 2007
This is the wine, the Sirius (also from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Medocino), which really a wine of excitement. It’s because this style of Petit Syrah is truly unique and we simply cannot make wines like this in Australia. It’s all about contained power- both of these wines are black, mouth coating and unctuous. They are also incredible complex, fine, multi layered and faceted wines. They will reward patience but also offer something special when young.
