From the excellent 1994 Rioja vintage, this Gran Reserva is at the peak of it’s powers! It shows lovely mushroom characters and with the extra age the oak has become seamless. Even though it is 17 years old it still finishes with great acidity. There is some life still left in this gem.

The 2004 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, and 5% Graciano aged for 26 months in French and American oak. Made in a traditional style, it is already beginning to show aromatic complexity from its extended aging. Cedar, leather, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and blackberry lead to a rich, elegant, plush wine in the style of the superb 2004 vintage. The new releases (all 100% Mencia) include the entry-level 2009 Petalos del Bierzo sourced mainly from leased vineyards with vine age ranging from 40-90 years. It was aged for a few weeks in new French barriques followed by 6-10 months in seasoned barrels. It shows lovely density and purity in an up-front style. Dark black cherries, violets, and Asian spices perch on a medium-bodied frame with well integrated oak and an elegant personality.
