The goal here is to aim higher than your standard “base” or “classico” Barolo. The Paolo Scavino 2015 Barolo is made with a complicated blend of fruit from seven vineyard sites spread clear across the appellation from Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, Serralunga d’Alba and more townships. Each parcel is fermented separately, and some parcels are split into two or more individual fermentations. In order to maintain the highest quality standards, some 10% of the fruit is sold off as bulk, and once the overall selection is whittled down, the best fruit remains in-house. This is a compact and darkly saturated wine with bold blueberry and blackberry fruit. The wine shows a steady center of gravity in this warm, fruit-driven vintage."

Perfect drinking window, at the mo!
With a few years on it now after resting in our Wine Ark storage, this 2015 has softened to reveal all the good things that quality Barolo reflects.
Represent insane value! TC

The Details
Variety - Nebbiolo
Country - Italy
Region - Piemonte
Sub Region - Barolo
Extra - Cork
Year - 2015
Volume - 750ml

About the Wine Maker

Paolo Scavino established the estate in 1921 in the historic township of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Langhe region in Piemont. The estate is owned and managed by two generations of Scavino; Enrico who followed in the footsteps of his father Paolo, and his daughters Enrica and Elisa. This stable wine promises to maintain its character for several days after opening. Go on, turn your world upside down with this one...” TC

The Details

Variety - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris
Country - Italy
Region - Friuli Venezia Giulia
Extra - Cork
Year - NV
Volume - 750ml

About the Wine Maker

Dario Princic's winery is located in the village of Oslavia, just north of the town of Gorizia, northwest of Trieste and right up against the border with Slovenia. Cepparello is a blend of Sangiovese from different vineyards, selected by Di Marchi on the basis of "the best exposure, elevation, soil, genetics and age. I feel this adds complexity.” The first vintage was in 1980 when 100% Sangiovese was not permitted under the Chianti Classico rules. Those rules have since changed but the wine remains an IGT Toscana. It has a supremely enticing nose with cream and exotic spice, reminding me of Arabian spice markets. With the 2019 there is an added precision to the aromas, less heavy oak, and no greenness on the palate. It is concentrated with a rich velvety texture but without any heaviness and with a gentle unforced quality. The tannins are fine and very well integrated, in fact finer and better integrated than even the excellent 2016 vintage. It is of course very young now but it’s almost too delicious not to drink! It is through the use of amphorae (tinajas from Villarobledo, Spain), their shape and the porosity of the clay, that all the phases of the transformation from grape to wine are carried out with purity and balance. This transition is not subject to any interference and thus brings to us only the character of the land and the variety. Their roots plunge deep in the stones and sand of the soil carried by the river Noce giving rise to wines with a dense and mineral texture. Beyond the fundamental biodynamic preparations 500 and 501, which enhance soil and plant health, they also utilize natural insecticides like stinging nettle extract, quassia wood powder, chamomile, and valerian when necessary. The vines, planted from 2003 to 2016, are cultivated as bush vines, alberello style, and are arranged in a pattern known as "mare monti," to capitalize on the breezes from both the Mediterranean Sea and the Monti Iblei, each about 15km away.

The predominant soil type is the 'terre rosse,' a nutrient-poor red sand originating from the southern Apennines, rich in active calcium carbonate. Harvesting is conducted on a plant-by-plant basis, prioritizing quality over quantity, with yields maintained at about 35 hl/ha for all four wines. The Alessandria family crafts compelling, traditionally-made wines from their estate vineyards in Verduno and Monforte d'Alba, offering them at prices that are reasonable by today's standards. Those who appreciate structured, cellar-worthy Barolos will find these wines indispensable. Antonio Galloni of Vinous.com notes that the Alessandria family has been part of this serene landscape since the mid-19th century. Established in 1870, Fratelli Alessandria was at the heart of Barolo winemaking in Verduno, a place where the dry style of Nebbiolo wines we cherish today was first developed, and where wines were bottled individually rather than shipped in bulk. This led to Verduno's international acclaim as the epitome of Barolo, coveted by collectors throughout Europe. Currently, Verduno is undergoing a revival, with the Alessandria "brothers" at the helm, elevating Verduno's wines to their former glory. It remains a family endeavor, with Gian Battista, Alessandro, and Alessandro's son, Vittore, as custodians of this age-old estate. Verduno's offerings are precisely what connoisseurs seek in Barolo: intricate yet not overpowering, robust yet delicate. The Alessandria family, Vittore remarks, reflects the terrain's character, honoring their ancestors' legacy while also "looking ahead" to ensure each bottle captures Barolo's quintessential nature from Verduno.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0616/4211/3208/files/441B600B-0E2C-44C6-A633-4ACBEDB75843.jpg?v=1774397125
antica-formula-vermouth-1l
Antica Formula Vermouth 1l

The Wine

The exquisite Antica Formula! Their legacy dates back to the Unification of Italy, with a continuous tradition aimed at maximizing the potential of Alpine Nebbiolo in the distinctive terroir of Valtellina—a valley nestled between the Rhaetian Alps and the Orobie, enjoying a unique microclimate. The terraced vineyards bask in sunlight and are caressed by the cool northern winds. The company's name, Ar.pe.pe., is derived from Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, who in 1984, drawing on the experience from his father and grandfather's endeavors, embarked on a new winemaking venture, infusing it with the rich heritage of values and knowledge passed down through his family. Today, the winery is under the stewardship of Isabella and Emanuele Pellizzati Perego, Arturo's offspring. They oversee the 13 hectares of vineyards in the core of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, spanning Sassella, Grumello, and Inferno. The grape processing is a manual affair, with harvesters carrying small baskets of grapes on their shoulders along paths ascending the cliffs. In the cellar, the aim is to allow the Alpine Nebbiolo to articulate its finest expression, employing traditional methods involving vats, large barrels, steel or concrete tanks, and an abundance of patience—the kind that respects the necessary time for maturation.

The Wine

This specialty grappa is crafted from grapes/pomace harvested in the famous Tignanello vineyard and is available only in limited quantities.
