It’s red fruited, shows spice and perfume, and what you (or maybe I) might call something of an autumnal character, and a touch of mocha oak. It’s medium-bodied, cherry and red fruits, a gentle sappiness, fine-grained powdery tannin grip, with a juicy and spicy finish of excellent length, a twist of orange peel in the aftertaste. Along the way, they tasted plenty of wines, but the real gems came from Tolpuddle Vineyard, near Richmond, founded in 1988. The moment they stepped through its gates, they were smitten, and soon it became theirs. These days, Tolpuddle releases its wines each year via a waitlist. Set in south-east Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, just outside the historic village of Richmond and about 20 minutes from Hobart, the vineyard is named for the Tolpuddle Martyrs — British farm workers sent to Australia in the 1830s for trying to start a union. Frequent spring rainfall brought intense pressure from both downy and powdery mildew, while late September rains left Nebbiolo especially vulnerable to botrytis, requiring rigorous selection in the vineyard. The wine blends fruit from a young leased parcel in Bussia, farmed since 2019, with declassified fruit from old-vine Ravera and a second, younger Ravera vineyard. Aged for 18 months in large oak casks before bottling in mid-February, it delivers a lighter, more lifted expression with high-toned aromas and a punchy, energetic personality. The oldest vines on the estate, planted largely in the 1950s and 1960s and never entirely replanted, lend the wine impressive depth and authority. From the outset, Bussia is remarkably expressive, offering rounded fruit, beautiful aromatic intensity and the broadest structure of the three 2022 Barolos. Although it spent a comparatively shorter 30 months in large oak casks, six months less than Brunate, the wine possesses the longest runway for aging, with the concentration and balance to reward extended cellaring. Since the passing of their father, Giuseppe "Beppe" Rinaldi, in 2018, sisters Marta and Carlotta have devoted even greater attention to meticulous farming, and the quality of this wine speaks to that unwavering commitment in the vineyard.'

The Details
Variety - Nebbiolo
Country - Italy
Region - Piemonte
Sub Region - Langhe
Extra - Cork
Year - 2022
Volume - 750ml

About the Wine Maker

Giuseppe Rinaldi is among Piedmont’s most esteemed producers and a prominent champion of classic Langhe wines. Currently, the winery is managed by brothers Pablo and Vincent Chevrot. Their parents initiated the bottling of wines under the Domaine Chevrot label in the 1970s, significantly contributing to Maranges' recognition as an appellation in 1988. Prior to this, the region's wines were simply labeled as Côte de Beaune - Villages. The Maranges appellation encompasses three quaint villages: Dezize, Sampagny, and Cheilly. Pablo Chevrot, who once presided over the Maranges appellation, is an excellent resource for inquiries about the area. Besides overseeing the winery, he is also a founding member and Vice President of "Les Aligoteurs," a collective dedicated to the promotion of premium aligoté wine crafted by skilled vintners.

Domaine Chevrot currently possesses 18.5 hectares of vineyards, comprising 50% pinot noir, 40% chardonnay, and 10% aligoté, spanning the appellations of Maranges, Santenay, and Hautes Côtes de Beaune. Some of their vines, planted by the current winemakers' grandfather, are as old as 75 years. Pablo and Vincent have preserved their family's legacy while also enhancing it, notably by transitioning to organic farming practices in 2008. Soil cultivation is a priority; they utilize two horses to plow five hectares of land. The introduction of seeded cover crops is another vital practice that enriches, aerates, and stabilizes the soil, as well as mitigates erosion. Various plants contribute differently: grains add structure, legumes like beans and clover capture atmospheric nitrogen, and cruciferous plants such as mustard introduce minerals and help aerate the soil. Organic compost is used in the vineyards, along with minimal copper and sulfur applications to address oidium and other concerns.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0616/4211/3208/files/698FDC7D-2169-48B5-98C7-91F52018303D.jpg?v=1792469447
lonia-cava-brut-2023
Lonia Cava Brut 2023

The Wine

Solid white-fruit aromas blend with a grassy note of hay as well as dusty floral scents.
