The Gang called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration. It is through the use of amphorae (tinajas from Villarobledo, Spain), their shape and the porosity of the clay, that all the phases of the transformation from grape to wine are carried out with purity and balance. This transition is not subject to any interference and thus brings to us only the character of the land and the variety. This terrific wine offers a riveting combination of rich, roasted hazelnuts and grapefruit with bright acidity and deep, powerful minerality; it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with a bright spine of acidity and a long, saline finish. Elevage is for twenty-four months on fine lees in tank (20%) and older barrels (80%). The way Philippe Valette works is similar that of Claude Maréchal in the Cote de Beaune which is to say meticulous care of the vineyards and a way of making wine with minimal intervention in a natural manner. The result is extravagant but very elegant Chardonnays. The original Armand Rousseau was at the forefront of the first wave of domaine bottling in the 1930s. He was succeeded by his son Charles in 1959, shortly after they had bought a significant slice of the Clos St Jacques vineyard. Today Eric, grandson of Armand, is in charge of the vines and cellar, with the help of his daughter Cyrielle. The domaine produces pale, finely structured wines of great elegance and stamina. The simple principle of old (but not ancient) vines and sensible yields dictates the Rousseau style. Sometimes the wines can appear light in their youth, but they nearly always take on weight as they age. The farming here is traditional, with green harvesting where necessary to control yields (which range between 30 and 40hl/ha). The vineyards are ploughed and the use of sprays minimal. In the winery, 90% of the fruit is de-stemmed – the 10% whole-bunch adding tannin and structure to the wines. Fermentation is in open-topped stainless steel vats, with regular pumping over and punch-downs, but temperatures kept below 31°C. The fruit is then pressed gently, settles and transferred to barrel where the wines gently mature. While the wines are by far some of the most collectible, commanding high prices on the secondary market, the family makes great wines with the hope that they will be drunk, not traded – a hope that we share. BBR

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0616/4211/3208/files/Armand_Rousseau_Ruchottes-Chambertin_Grand_Cru.png?v=1747011872
jean-foillard-morgon-cote-du-py-2023
Jean Foillard Morgon Cote Du Py 2023

The Wine

The Cote du Py is a special place, near the village of Morgon in Beaujolais. I say that because if he transported his vineyard holdings, metier and extraordinary talent to the Côte de Nuits then there is no chance that you would be reading about him in these pages. His wine would be as exclusive and expensive as Domaine Leroy or Georges Roumier. It is only because Beaujolais has been much maligned by the ‘nouveau’ phenomenon, poor quality marketing and oceans of basic quality wines that the regions superstars remain undiscovered. Jean Foillard is one of the great winemakers in France and, in his hands, wine is no ordinary thing. Jean Foillard is a fervent supporter, like Marcel Lapierre, of the natural wine growing and making methods of the legendary Jules Chauvet. This includes keeping whole clusters of grapes in vats for 2 to 3 weeks at a low temperature before fermentation, using only natural yeast, no pumping, no fining and no filtration. Furthermore he ages his wine in barrels brought from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti..... the results are sublime. He is a cult wine hero amongst the very many young, free-spirited vignerons in France who are now looking back to nature to make fine wine.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0616/4211/3208/files/46EF9A5B-CB6C-4D3B-A8BB-22C78D1F978F.jpg?v=1752223308
sorrenberg-cabernet-sauvignon-cabernet-franc-merlot-2023
Sorrenberg Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot 2023

The Wine

The 2023 blend consists of 30-40% Merlot and Cabernet Franc, a touch of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere, with the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon.
