The Wine

The ‘San Pietro’ Friulano vineyard is located in the Gramogliano Hills in the Province of Udine, along the Slovenian Border. The general traits of Friulano encompass soft herbs, wild grasses, citrus and pear, with mineral cut, but it can also be relatively rich wine. The ‘San Pietro’ displays these characters seamlessly. From the start, the free run juice, is fermented and aged on its lees for up to 18 months before bottling with low amounts of sulphur. This lees contact builds subtle but tremendous body and depth. In bottle, the ‘San Pietro’ is slightly aromatic, with fine-herbs aromas - with a nutty, almost almondy finish showing great texture and minerality. '

A truly delicious wine that’s unmistakably born in this picturesque north east corner of Italy! TC

About the Wine Maker

I Clivi, founded by Ferdinando Zanusso in the mid-1990s, produces exceptionally pure wines in the steep slopes of Colli Orientali and Collio in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the far north east of Italy, near the borders of Slovenia and Austria. It’s an area renowned for producing some of the best white wines in Italy. Now run predominantly by Ferdinando’s son Mario (pictured above), I Clivi is producing some of the most age-worthy and delicious wines in the region.

Ferdinando and Mario farm 12 hectares of old vines (averaging between 60 and 90 years old) from indigenous grape varieties of the area. I Clivi is certified organic and very hands off in the vineyards, yet incredibly detailed in their work with pruning based on the vegetative needs of each vine. Yields are incredibly low – averaging only 20 hl/ha – and grapes are hand-harvested.
