The Wine

"Claude makes one of the great Bourgogne Pinot Noirs, crafted from the Pommard and Chassagne area. This vin is often the winner in class of the La Revue du Vin de France tasting.

Claude on the 2019 Vintage: Mythic! The harvest was certainly volume-limited, much by the frost of early April so the wines have concentration but the mid-season dryness brought richness too – as they should, we are 50% down in volume! There was also some hail in Savigny and Chorey which didn’t help!

"The 2019 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Gravel has a commendable bouquet, considering the status, with blackcurrant mixed with strawberry and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, a little chewiness towards the finish. Otherwise, this is a perfectly decent Bourgogne Côte d’Or." Neal Martin (Vinous)

Tasted this on arrival. Little more elegant and mineral than the superb 2018 - but has all the same sort of great stuff going on. Second day as expected showed even better and complete. Drink now with a decant or cellar medium term to finish the job. Classically styled and weighted! TC

About the Wine Maker

Catherine and Claude Maréchal have been stand outs in Burgundy thanks to the precise, elegant and finely scented wines they produce from their small holdings scattered on six Côte de Beaune communes. Claude began the domaine in 1981 and in the mid 1980’s he met Henri Jayer (The ‘Godfather of Burgundy: 1922-2006), who became a huge source of inspiration and learning. Since then Maréchal has, year after year, honed his skills and today offers incredibly fine wine, among the greats in Burgundy. These wines offer everything one wants in Burgundy but that is so hard to find - admirable concentration, purity and finesse combined with texture and balance that will see these wines evolve over many years. Claude's wines are not expensive for top level Burgundy, something very rare these days. We have stocked every Vintage release of the Maréchal vins since coming into Oz, which speaks for itself! The quality of these wines is nothing short of phenomenal compared to the usual quality of the respective appellations’
