The Wine

4 stars, John Livingstone-Learmonth, The Cradle Of The Rhône, March 2021 "81% Grenache, plus Mourvèdre, Carignan and Syrah. 100% whole-bunch fermented and matured in concrete tank. ‘(vat) steady, quite full red robe; the bouquet appeals, gives a soft red berry aroma, resembles strawberry jam with floral instincts. It’s stylish, especially given the context of the hot summer. The palate has an easy, supple tone, is lined with well defined berry fruits, the tannins adding a little darkness and tang towards the finish. This has been very well made to achieve elegance, holds charming fruit, and has the structure to evolve kindly, aided by its clear, trim structure. From late 2021. 2032." 34″

About the Wine Maker

This estate is located in northern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape and Cotes du Rhone vineyards border directly on to Chateauneuf du Pape close to the estate winery. 100% whole bunch vinification in large cement. Ageing in cement tank for 18 months for both the reds with no fining or filtration. Charvin produces finely styled Grenache based wines showing great depth and finesse (approximately 80% Grenache for each wine with small amounts of Vacaresse and Mourvedre as well as small amounts of Carignan and Bourboulenc for the Côtes du Rhône). Winemaking is traditional with no de-stemming and all ageing is done in cement tanks. No wood is used for the elevage of either wine. There are no secrets here, simply old vines, very low yields and minimal winemaking intervention. The Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located. “Charvin may indeed produce the Richebourg of Chateauneuf du Pape.”— Robert Parker Jr, The Wine Advocate
