The Wine

The Charmes lieu-dit is one of the highest in Morgon. South facing, the soil is of Schist and granite. A general trait of this wine reflects a vibrant colour, tending to red rather than purple. Soaring aromatics. The tannins are firm, almost angular, with a linear drive, utterly different from the ‘Cote du Py’.  Very fresh mouthfeel – vibrant and fresh acidity is a sign of this wine as the vines in Charmes are at. Drink now with a double decant or cellar up to 10yrs +

2020 is a vintage full of the sumptuous fruit and silky texture that Jean (above) is always able to harness, the vintage providing admirable concentration but the wines still show vibrant jellied red fruit, very attractive floral and spice aromas and caressingly silky mouthfeel - as always they all offer delicious succulence as young wines, and as always they are perfectly balanced. 2020 is a Foillard vintage you can put deep in the cellar, it's a vintage that has all the attributes for cellaring. The 2020 vintage has not been reviewed by anyone yet, lateness due to Covid complications plus the fact that Jean is often the last to release means that it may be some months before they are - in any case his track record since the early 90's speaks for itself and the 2019 got 95 points from Vinous, their top wine of the vintage. About the Wine Maker

“Thankfully Jean Foillard doesn’t live in Burgundy. I say that because if he transported his vineyard holdings, metier and extraordinary talent to the Côte de Nuits then there is no chance that you would be reading about him in these pages. His wine would be as exclusive and expensive as Domaine Leroy or Georges Roumier. It is only because Beaujolais has been much maligned by the ‘nouveau’ phenomenon, poor quality marketing and oceans of basic quality wines that the regions superstars remain undiscovered. Jean Foillard is one of the great winemakers in France and, in his hands, wine is no ordinary thing. Jean Foillard is a fervent supporter, like Marcel Lapierre, of the natural wine growing and making methods of the legendary Jules Chauvet. This includes keeping whole clusters of grapes in vats for 2 to 3 weeks at a low temperature before fermentation, using only natural yeast, no pumping, no fining and no filtration. Furthermore he ages his wine in barrels brought from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti..... the results are sublime. He is a cult wine hero amongst the very many young, free-spirited vignerons in France who are now looking back to nature to make fine wine.
