The Wine

The Kay Brothers' Block 6 Shiraz is a robust, cellar-worthy wine, featuring a rich fruit profile, chocolatey tannins, and a malty oak base. The 1.6-hectare Block 6, part of the larger 22-hectare Amery Vineyards, was originally known for its old bush vines and pumpkins. The grapes from Block 6 are batch-fermented in traditional open fermenters built by the Kay Brothers in 1895. Some batches are hand-plunged, while others ferment under header boards. Post-fermentation, the wine is drained and basket-pressed into a combination of new and aged American and Eastern European oak barrels, where it matures for 18 to 24 months before being blended and bottled with a screw cap.

About the Wine Maker

Kay Brothers Winery, the oldest family-run winery in the region still owned by the founding family, has been a staple of McLaren Vale for 125 years. The Kay family settled there on February 2, 1891, and the winemaking traditions are carried on today by the third and fourth generations in the heritage-listed stone cellars.

A detailed diary has been maintained for every year the Kay Family has resided at Amery. You can read excerpts on their website. The winery is one of the best in the region, earning a 5 red star rating from James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2015. The Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz, made from 123-year-old vines, is rated OUTSTANDING in Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine.
