The Wine

Produced from a blend of estate grown Pinot Noir parcels from Kooyong's Tuerong and Balnarring vineyards. 

The fruit was fermented in open vats. Fermentation commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 15 to 18 days. The wine underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The maturation period was 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons (5% new) and large format foudre. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.

The 2021 Kooyong Massale Pinot Noir offers a youthful perfume of black cherry, wild summer berries and dried rose petal. On the palate, the wine is deep, medium-bodied and layered with flavours of cherry and cranberry, soft pillowy tannins and excellent length and fruit purity.

It’s delicate, but precise, with bright red fruits, a subtle sappiness, fine emery tannin, and a fresh and juicy red fruit finish of fine shape and length. A smattering of dried herb and meaty reduction finishes it off. Charming, understated, and really good to drink."

90/100 Stuart Knox, The Real Review : "Medium-depth, bright ruby-red colour. Dark cherry, smoked meat and sage aromas. Dark cherry fruit with good concentration, some complexing herbal notes as well. Fine tannins have the power to balance the fruit and it carries quite long to a dry finish."

About the Wine Maker

Kooyong is planted to 40 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris between an altitude of 105 and 120m above sea level. The first vines were planted in 1996 and the original blocks comprise five distinct sites of which three are planted to Pinot Noir and two to Chardonnay. As our viticultural understanding of the property has developed we have planted two more sites to Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, applying a higher density planting model. The best section of each vineyard is reserved for the Single Vineyard wines.
