The Wine

Kooyong Massale is a blend of Pinot Noir from our Tuerong and Balnarring vineyards. The fruit was fermented in open vats. Fermentation commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts and lasted 15 to 18 days. The wine underwent indigenous malolactic fermentation. The maturation period was 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons (5% new) and large format foudre. The wine was bottled without fining and with minimal filtration. Kooyong

92 Points Gary Walsh, The WineFront, April 2023 "Cherry, strawberry, and sage, with discreet spice and cedar oak. It’s fresh, all cherry pip, and strawberry, light tanin, bright acidity. It’s on the money and very good to drink. Frisky red fruits and spice is the import, with plenty of Mornington goodness rolled in. I really like it."

93 Points Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot, April 2023 "Another very fine Pinot from Kooyong, sourced from their Balnarring and Tuerong vineyards. Fermentation in open vats with wild yeasts for 15 to 18 days. Nine months maturation in a mix of different French oak formats – barriques, puncheons and large format foudre – of which 10% were new. A vibrant garnet hue. Spices, some earthy notes intertwined with florals and dried herbs. A hint of animal skins. An appealing and alluring Pinot Noir nose. The palate is seamless, a soft texture with cushiony tannins. There is also fresh acidity and good length with lovely raspberry notes emerging across the palate. Lots to like here."

About the Wine Maker

Kooyong is planted to 40 hectares of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris between an altitude of 105 and 120m above sea level. The first vines were planted in 1996 and the original blocks comprise five distinct sites of which three are planted to Pinot Noir and two to Chardonnay. As our viticultural understanding of the property has developed we have planted two more sites to Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, applying a higher density planting model. The best section of each vineyard is reserved for the Single Vineyard wines.
