The Wine

90-93 Points Jasper Morris MW ' The Dereys decided to use just 50% rather than 100% whole bunch vinification and no sulphur until after malolactic. The vines were planted using pinot fin ex Domaine Ponsot in 1973. Rich purple, the nose is explosive and not quite in control in this sample. The wine on the palate though has a superb intensity which comes from the quality of the vine material, a good site and intelligent winemaking. There is a layer of velvet over and above the others and excellent persistence. There is just a little wildness which will need to be managed before bottling so as to earn the 5th star. Drink from 2025-2030.'

The subsoil of Les Genelières is mainly composed of limestone.  At the top,  Comblanchien Limestone is locally covered with gravel scree called bedded  grèzes.  In the middle part, the Premeaux Limestone is the subsoil.  In the lower part of the climate, the  Entroques limestone is very present and outcrops over more than half of the climate. The thin, stony soils at the top of the hillside thicken down the slope.

About the Wine Maker

Domaine Derey is from a lesser known village in Couchey, a village that is sold under the name of it’s better known neighbor Marsannay. Couchey is located north of Fixin and south of Marsannay. The Derey family has been farming these vineyards since 1850 and remains a true family business to this day. The parents, Pierre and Suzanne, run the estate with their 3 sons Maxime, Romain, and Pierre-Marie. The family uses traditional methods to work the vineyards and gentle techniques that respect the soil.
