The Wine

The Bass Phillip 2021 vintage is the first vintage whereby the full growing season, vinification, elevage and bottling are all under the control of the new team, led by Jean-Marie Fourrier. The team focused on precision and attention to detail throughout the year, both in the vineyard and in the winery. The growing season, while challenging during the early growth stages, developed into ideal flowering, fruit set, and ripening phases. The above average yields have resulted in elegant and finessed wines with complexity and red summer fruits up front. The wines have great cellaring potential or be equally enjoyable in their youth. As we continue the investments and improvements here at Bass Phillip, we hope the 2021 vintage brings you as much pleasure as we had in nurturing it.

Fragrant potpourri of aromas, rose petals and red berry notes, with a hint of China tea; the very essence of Pinot Noir. A classic iron fist in a velvet glove palate. A lush fruit driven middle, enveloped by powdery tannins with delicious flavours that dance delicately across the palate. Bass Phillip

About the Wine Maker

"When Bass Phillip hits the highs, it truly pushes the boundaries of Australian Pinot Noir greatness."
Lisa Perotti-Brown, MW

"Putting it simply, Bass Phillip has made some of the best pinot noir I’ve drunk in my whole life, from anywhere of any age."
Robert Geddes, MW

"As a Master of Wine and former sommelier at New York’s Veritas, a restaurant that boasted the world’s finest wine list, I have tasted Bass Phillip consistently since the 1998 vintage. 1998 was a year that elicited comments from myself and other sommeliers, all exposed to the greatest of Burgundies, suggesting synergies with top-drawer Vosne-Romanée."
Ned Goodwin MW

This is one of the best releases from one of Australia's greatest small producers. As followers of Bass Phillip wines will surely know, when they're on - they're on!  This iconic Australian producer has had a changing of the guard in recent years, and the estate is now in the hands of Jean-Marc Fourrier of Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey Chambertin. The Bass Phillip vineyards have been organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002, the only vineyards in South Gippsland to do so. The wines are vinified by natural yeast with minimal pumping and filtration and no fining agents are used; as such, the wines are incredibly pure and honest expressions of Gippsland pinot noir.
