Chateau Chateau Senejac 2022
The Wine
54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot
‘Now biodynamic, Chateau Senejac has gone from being a lightish luncheon claret to a lower yielding, deeper and fuller wine that much better demonstrates its inland terroir and the high proportion of the Cabernet grapes here. The improvements wrought by Alfred Tesseron and the team from cult Chateau Pontet-Canet have really changed the vineyard and therefore the wines for the better and for pure drinking pleasure this is a buy.
Ever since the Cordier family, of Chateau Talbot, bought this 39-hectare estate in 1999, its reputation has been quietly escalating, and it received another jump in 2008, when the Pontet-Canet wine-making team came onboard. With Jean-Michel Comme in charge of the vineyards, it is no surprise that this estate – as at Pontet Canet – is now certified biodynamic. ....this remains one of the most exciting properties on the Left Bank.’
Jane Anson, Decanter
93-94 Pts James Suckling ‘Very attractive, crunchy dark fruit with medium to full body and spiced, chocolatey character. Firm and structured with velvety tannins and a lingering finish. Plenty of currant and hazelnut character.’
91-93 Pts Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider ‘With notes of flowers, blackberries, black currants, and black raspberries on the nose, you get a concentrated, round, dark-fruited, rich wine with more of those sweet, juicy black fruits in the finish along with a hint of chocolate and spicy espresso that comes in at the end of the finish. The wine blends 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2025-2035.’
92 Pts Georgina Hindle, Decanter ‘Clean and mineral, this is quite serious with a dark, and rich layer of black fruits with liquorice, flint and graphite. I like the sleek cool suaveness of it, it's not shouting but is really well worked. More of a serious, less acidic style, but still vibrant and supple, well balanced and well presented. Round, softly juicy with bite. Harvest 12-29 September. Yield of 32hl/ha. Ageing in French oak for 15 months, 30% new. 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Drink 2026 - 2034.’
90-92 Pts William Kelley, Wine Advocate ‘The 2022 Sénéjac is one of the best wines that this northern Médoc cru Bourgeois has produced in the last decade or two. Offering up aromas of cherries, dark berries, peonies and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and succulent, with a rich core of fruit, supple tannins and a persistent finish.’
