About the Wine Maker
Founded by Steve Planthaber, originally from Adelaide, who after finishing school moved to the South Island of New Zealand. Relocating to Marlborough with his partner, Kirsty Sutherland, deepened his passion for wine. It’s hard not to be inspired when meeting the Sutherlands, pioneers of viticulture in the region, part of Cloudy Bay’s early success before establishing their own Dog Point estate. Keen to forge his own path, after 12 years managing production and operations at Cloudy Bay, Steve launched his own wine brand, Settlement.
Settlement, named after the beautiful Amphitheatre single vineyard site in the Omaka Valley, focuses entirely on crafting organic, old-vine, single-vineyard wines from exceptional Marlborough sites.
The Heritage vineyard, planted in 1990 with the UDD1 MS clone of Sauvignon Blanc, lies at the southern end of the Wairau Valley. Its soil is a free-draining silty clay loam over clay subsoil, shaped by historic flooding of the Wairau across the valley floor.
