The Wine

54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot

Now biodynamic, Chateau Senejac has gone from being a lightish luncheon claret to a lower yielding, deeper and fuller wine that much better demonstrates its inland terroir and the high proportion of the Cabernet grapes here. The improvements wrought by Alfred Tesseron and the team from cult Chateau Pontet-Canet have really changed the vineyard and therefore the wines for the better and for pure drinking pleasure this is a buy.
Ever since the Cordier family, of Chateau Talbot, bought this 39-hectare estate in 1999, its reputation has been quietly escalating, and it received another jump in 2008, when the Pontet-Canet wine-making team came onboard. With Jean-Michel Comme in charge of the vineyards, it is no surprise that this estate – as at Pontet Canet – is now certified biodynamic. ....this remains one of the most exciting properties on the Left Bank.’
Jane Anson, Decanter

92-92 Pts James Suckling 'Rather seductive Senejac with blackcurrant and chocolate character, as well as some walnuts and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a long, flavorful finish. Nice balance. Consistent in the trilogy.'

91 Pts Jane Anson, Decanter 'Gentle coffee smoke on the nose and spiced waves of flavour that add interest and complexity. This is a good wine with gentle acidities and enough autumnal berry fruit to carry it off. Juicy on the finish, this is another successful vintage at Sénéjac. Drinking Window 2025 - 2038.'

91 Pts Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider 'Cherries, currants and cocoa are on the nose and also in the core of this wine. Medium-bodied, soft and vibrant, with a touch of chalk and oak that comes through in the mid-palate and in the fruit-filled endnote. You can open and enjoy this with pleasure on release, with give it a bit of age as well. Drink from 2024-2038'

The 2020 represents astounding value. A 'Claret that benefits from air contact/decant and certainly a stella option to pop a case away and lose in the cellar for a decade… TC

About the Wine Maker

Château Sénéjac is one of most famous Crus Bourgeois of the Haut-Médoc, located near to the vineyards of Margaux, in the far south of the Haut-Médoc region. Nicolas de Bloys is the first known owner. In the 16th century, this spirited squire - husband of Jeanne Fleix - planted the first vines on the estate.

A historic estate of 150 hectares, of which only 38 are under vine. Its reputation for making high quality wine blossomed in the 1980s and then in 1999 it entered a new era when it was bought by Lorraine Cordier. Today, it's managed by Nancy Bignon Cordier.
