The Wine

Defying the skeptics, Mt. Lord Vineyard is perched on an east-facing steep slope high above the Coal River Valley. The vineyard thrives on low-yielding, multi-clonal blocks and our philosophy of small-batch winemaking with the finest French oak barriques, presenting a challenge and thrill with each harvest.

Upon opening, notes of blue florals and olive are prominent. Aromas of liquorice and Doris plum, along with hints of Asian 5 spice and Tasmanian native bushes, provide a winter herbaceous lift. The aromatics have a brooding quality, with notes of flint and blueberry. The wine's fine natural acidity and powdery tannins temper the fruit profile, which includes fresh plum, tamarillo, cured meats, and truffle. The interplay of natural acidity and delicate red fruits delivers flavor throughout the palate and lingers impressively for a young wine, leading to an earthy texture and a mellowing of red fruits, enriched with savory, cocoa notes. Dalrymple Team

96 Pts Huon Hooke, The Real Review 'Deep-ish red with a tinge of purple and a bouquet of black cherry with traces of beetroot and Campari—perhaps from whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is full and generous, even opulent on the palate, with terrific power and density thanks to high extract and concentrated fruit. The tannins are abundant and supple, surrounding a deep core of rich flavour. Long and super-satisfying aftertaste. A seriously impressive pinot and a big step up from the previous vintage.'

About the Wine Maker

Originally established by Bertel and Anne Sundstrup in 1987. It was the sloping hills overlooking Bass Strait that made the site unique and inspired the Hill-Smith family to purchase the vineyard in 2007, along with distinct single sites around Tasmania in their pursuit to produce the perfect single site Pinot.
