The Wine

The Cote du Py is a special place, near the village of Morgon in Beaujolais. It's the highest elevated plot sitting on an extinct volcano whereby black hardened soils are known to produce structured, age-worthy reds which are both complex and much more expressive than what you might expect from Beaujolais. The soils are schist and granite, with some vines up to 90 years old (mixed with younger vines too). Drink now with a decant or cellar up to 10yrs +

The Côte du Py of Morgon is one of Beaujolais’ great vineyards and certainly its best known and Foillard is undoubtedly the master of the site. No one renders it with equal clarity, complexity or textural beauty.

Foillard’s rendition captures the wild cherry, mineral, and floral-tinged quality of the vineyard in an unparalleled way. He weaves silk into the texture and leaves a wine with haunting persistence and fragrance.

94 Pts - Neal Martin, Vinous 'The 2023 Morgon Côte du Py comes from several parcels of granite and schistous soils with many centurion vines. This has a wonderful, very complex bouquet with exquisite delineation: crushed stone filters through dark berry fruit alongside hints of ash and light stony scents. The sapid and vivacious palate has filigree tannins, a silver thread of acidity, and a touch of cracked black pepper towards the long finish. This is one of the best Morgon's you can buy...but that's old news'

About the Wine Maker

“Thankfully Jean Foillard doesn’t live in Burgundy. I say that because if he transported his vineyard holdings, metier and extraordinary talent to the Côte de Nuits then there is no chance that you would be reading about him in these pages. His wine would be as exclusive and expensive as Domaine Leroy or Georges Roumier. It is only because Beaujolais has been much maligned by the ‘nouveau’ phenomenon, poor quality marketing and oceans of basic quality wines that the regions superstars remain undiscovered. Jean Foillard is one of the great winemakers in France and, in his hands, wine is no ordinary thing. Jean Foillard is a fervent supporter, like Marcel Lapierre, of the natural wine growing and making methods of the legendary Jules Chauvet. This includes keeping whole clusters of grapes in vats for 2 to 3 weeks at a low temperature before fermentation, using only natural yeast, no pumping, no fining and no filtration. Furthermore he ages his wine in barrels brought from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti..... the results are sublime. He is a cult wine hero amongst the very many young, free-spirited vignerons in France who are now looking back to nature to make fine wine.
