The Wine

Moppa Shiraz is a wine that captures the essence of our high north-western district. Sourced from over 12 distinct sites, the blend is artfully enhanced with a 2% splash each of Petit Verdot and Viognier for layered complexity. Vintage 2025 was early. Our Shiraz was harvested in small batches between February 18th and March 12th, including a parcel co-fermented on Viognier skins to lift aromatics. The late-ripening Petit Verdot followed on March 21st. Following wild fermentation in open-top fermenters and traditional pressing, the wine matured for 14 months in hogsheads (20% new French, American, Hungarian, and Romanian oak, balanced by seasoned barrels), ensuring the true character of Moppa shines through. This is a stunning release. Kalleske

About the Wine Maker

The Kalleske family has been farming and growing grapes on the same property near Greenock in South Australia’s Barossa Valley since 1853. Spanning seven generations, the family has built a reputation for producing wines that authentically reflect the character of their land and the Greenock sub-region.

After nearly 150 years of supplying grapes to other wineries, seventh-generation family members Troy and Tony Kalleske established the Kalleske wine label in 2002. Drawing on generations of viticultural knowledge, he began producing estate-grown wines from the family’s certified organic and biodynamic vineyards.

Long before sustainability became a mainstream focus within the wine industry, the Kalleske family had already begun their transition away from conventional farming methods. In 1998, the property achieved certification for both organic and biodynamic farming practices.

The philosophy is simple: healthy soils create healthy vines, which in turn produce grapes of greater vitality, integrity and expression. By eliminating synthetic chemicals and fertilisers, the family seeks to protect the vineyard ecosystem, preserve surrounding waterways and encourage long-term sustainability.

The estate encompasses more than 50 hectares and 36 vineyard blocks planted to a diverse range of varieties, including Shiraz, Grenache, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro and Tempranillo. Some of the vineyards are among the oldest in the region, including a Shiraz block planted in 1875 that contributes fruit to the flagship Eduard Shiraz, as well as a Grenache vineyard more than 90 years old.

Kalleske’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the vineyard into the winery. Traditional, minimal-intervention techniques are employed, including small-batch fermentation, open fermenters, wild yeasts, basket pressing and natural malolactic fermentation. The winery avoids the use of added tannins, enzymes and fining agents, allowing each wine to express the unique characteristics of its vineyard and vintage.

Under the brothers’ leadership, the winery has gained significant recognition both nationally and internationally. Among Troy’s many winemaking achievements are winning the inaugural Young Gun of Wine Award in 2007 and being named Barossa Winemaker of the Year in 2008.

Today, Kalleske stands as a leading example of how organic farming, old vines and traditional winemaking can combine to produce authentic wines that honour both family heritage and the distinctive terroir of the Barossa Valley.
