The Wine

80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc

89-91 Pts Antonio Galloni, Vinous 'The 2021 Teyssier is pliant and seductive as it is always. Crush red berry fruit spice mint and cedar and nicely woven together. Teyssier is a bit understated in this vintage but that's not a bad thing at all. If anything the 2021 impresses for its nuanced detail and overall finesse. Attractive floral and spices reappear on the finish. Sadly production is down a whopping 70% because of frost damage.'

88-90 Pts Jeb Dunnuck 'Harvested very late and based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Château Teyssier is a medium-bodied, rock-solid 2021 offering ripe, chocolaty dark fruits, some herbal and earthy goodness, ripe tannins, and good length on the finish. This is a perennial great value, and it should be worth checking out this year as well.'

89 Pts Georgie Hindle, Decanter 'Soft milk chocolate and blackcurrants with hints of violet. Balanced, creamy, soft and harmonious. It’s not flashy or showy, but displays good density, grip and overall length. Tannins are like satin with liquorice edges that give the depth. It’s structured and nuanced with ripe tones, touching on liqueur, with the minty, crushed stone aspect, too. Extremely drinkable - could open and enjoy with a steak or red meat. Great juiciness and brightness, not too much, not too acidic. Nicely weighted in the mouth. Just feels fresh and nicely crafted. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036'

About the Wine Maker

Chateau Teyssier, the heart of Jonathan Maltus’ Bordeaux operations, is situated in Vignonet, one of the five St Emilion communes, on the sandy plains below the prestigious limestone côtes and plateau where the town resides. The estate has a rich history of wine production dating back to 1714 when it was a simple farm.

Its transformation began in 1869 when historian Jules Roy (1844–1914) bought the property, building the charming château that still stands today and revitalizing the vineyards. While Château Teyssier remained a respected wine estate throughout the 20th century, its most significant developments came after Jonathan and Lyn Maltus took over in 1994.

Initially, it was just Jonathan, Lyn, and one employee managing everything from pruning vines to crafting and selling wine. Today, the vineyard spans about 50 hectares, and over the years, the couple has introduced modernizations, renovations, and expansions. The château was restored with a French-style interior, though by 2012, it had undergone extensive modernization, turning Teyssier into an enviable 21st-century home—one I admire while my wife envies.
