The Wine

The amphitheatre block shines through in this vintage, creating a kaleidoscope of perfume and intense flavour that is most enticing. Opulence is here in the form of honeysuckle, ripe fig, white peach, and a touch of apricot, wrapped in just the right amount of acidity to ensure the creaminess and roundness are not lost. The hero of this wine is the hidden gem, carrying all on its shoulders a perfectly judged phenolic structure. This not only lifts the wine but will ensure it ages exceptionally well. 95 Pts Gary Walsh; The Wine Front 'Complex and engaging, and specifically, I like the core of flint and bright acidity it offers, to counterbalance the richness and spice on offer here. I’m thinking green pear and apple, honey and floral perfume, a flicker of aniseed, ginger and fresh cut yellow nectarine, a subtle stuck match adds further interest. It’s juicy and flavoursome, but so well-balanced, a honeyed richness cut back by citrus acidity, and the finish is long, quite nutty and saline, with a tangerine tang to close. A righteous expression of Roussanne. Such energy and poise. Terrific. As an aside, if you can’t get your hands on the Chardonnay, this certainly gives you a flavour of the estate. About the Wine Maker

Giaconda is one of Australia’s most famous names. The Beechworth winery was established by Rick Kinzbrunner in 1982. A mechanical engineer by training, he became interested in wine in the early 1970s and spent the next 10 years traveling to wine-growing regions to learn as much as possible. Rick was the first to establish a vineyard of any consequence in Beechworth when he first planted in 1982, Giaconda is best known for its Chardonnay, but also produces Shiraz and Pinot Noir. The wines here are hand-crafted by Rick and his son Nathan, who do everything themselves and only take on help at harvest. Some of the most desirable wines in Australia, and indeed the world, Giaconda’s wines are in regrettably short supply...BBR
