The Wine

Château Chapelle d’Aliénor 2020, made by the Malet Roquefort family of Château La Gaffelière, is a standout Bordeaux Supérieur that truly delivers. Mostly Merlot with a dash of Cabernet Franc, it bursts with ripe cherry, plum, and blackberry aromas, accented by spice and a gentle touch of oak.

Smooth and lively on the palate, it layers juicy fruit with fine tannins and bright acidity for perfect balance. Partly aged in French oak for extra texture, it blends richness with elegance, finishing on lingering notes of cassis and soft vanilla. Enjoyable now but built to age beautifully for up to ten years, it’s a polished, modern Bordeaux that offers excellent value from one of Saint-Émilion’s top winemaking families.

About the Wine Maker

Run by the Malet-Roquefort family for over four centuries, Château La Gaffelière is one of the oldest family-owned estates in St. Emilion. Tucked between the Ausone and Pavie hills, its south-facing vineyard, averaging 35-year-old vines, produces elegant wines with captivating aromas and pure fruit character.

Once a benchmark for many top St. Emilion chateaux, La Gaffelière lost some direction in the 1970s and 80s. But with Stephane Derenoncourt now consulting, the estate has made a remarkable comeback. Parker notes the wine “has gone from strength to strength over the last decade,” returning to its former glory, with quality rivaling the 2005, 1947, or 1961 vintages.
