Clos Saouma Inopia Cotes du Rhone Villages Rouge 2023
The Wine
'We call it INOPIA—Latin for 'made from nothing'—as the land was empty and abandoned when we bought it in 2011. The soil is very poor and we decided not to bring any food to the roots. The objective is pure quality'. Mounir Saouma
Mostly Grenache, with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise in support. Mounir takes a wild, hands-off approach, starting with a cold soak of whole clusters before moving the juice into a mix of cement eggs, foudres, and older barrels on full lees for 16 months. This gentle touch gives the 2023 a savory, free-flowing character, with notes of red forest berries, damp earth, and dried licorice root. Supple and seamless.
A red burg lookalike - may catch a few educated palates out! TC
