The Wine

Croix Canon by Chateau Canon Croix Canon is the second wine of the highly regarded Chateau Canon. The grapes for this wine are specifically from a 11 hectare site, formerly Chateau Matras Grand Cru Classé and sandwiched between Chateau Canon and Chateau Angelus. Chanel's investment plan of the Chateau Canon acquired this new site in 2011, a bordering estate on the foothills of the Saint-Emilion plateau, made up of alluvium and erosion of the limestone plateau. It benefits from a unique vinification site, La Chapelle de Mazerat, a former 12th-century chapel is home to this second wine, produced with all the expertise of the 1er Grand Cru Classé, and which has its own facilities, vat-house and cellars for vinification and ageing. The plots are planted 70% to Merlot and 30% to Cabinet Franc, and the average age of the vines is 35 years. No berry from the Canon terroir was downgraded to enter the composition of Croix Canon.

65% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc. Separate vinification by parcel in conical shaped stainless steel vats. 18 months aging in barrel, 38% new.

92-93 Points - James Suckling "A creamy and pretty red with lots of dried flowers and spices with fresh fruit. Minerals, too. Medium to full-bodied. Chalky”

92 Points - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com "The 2018 Croix Canon is a total pleasure to taste today. Sumptuous and inviting, with so much appeal, Croix Canon is a fabulous wine to drink now and over the next decade, maybe more. Soft curves, silky tannins and pliant fruit give the 2018 so much charm. Dark plum, spice, new leather, rose petal and mint all wrap around the juicy finish. In a word: exquisite." Drink 2025 - 2033

93 Points - Jane Anson, Decanter "The vineyards used for Croix Canon are a little lower down on the slopes, on limestone, clay and sand, giving good aromatics but less depth than the grand vin. It's elegant and fresh, and good for earlier drinking. There were no blockages in either Cabernet or Merlot at Canon, and this 2018 is a great wine. Clean, fresh aromatics are apparent right from the off. The aromas just keep on coming in the glass, with scents of blueberry and raspberry, leading to a palate of beautiful tension and freshness. There is clear emphasis on the juicy, intact and intense fruit here." Drink 2025 - 2040

About the Wine Maker

Chateau Canon was first ‘founded’ by Jacques Kanon in 1760. It was he who had the château built and created the wine estate. Over the centuries the K was changed to a C, the name now synonymous with one of the right bank’s most sought-after wines. Château Canon was gradually brought into the 21st century after its acquisition in 1996 by the CHANEL Company. It took twenty years to restructure the vineyards, reinforce the underground galleries and return this 1er Grand Cru Classé to its former glory. Today, the property has reclaimed its original luster. Several million years old, Château Canon’s soil is very homogeneous. 34 hectares planted, 2/3rds Merlot, 1/3rd Cabernet Franc. Limestone bedrock veined with clay. Its roots plunge down into the sediments, which have survived the ages, flourishing in the soil’s clay texture with good water retention.
