Damiano Ciolli Cesanese Silene 2020
The Wine
Silene, derived from vines planted in the 1980s, is aged in both stainless steel and concrete to preserve the vibrant, fresh character of the superior 'Cesanese d'Affile', also known as 'Cesanese del Piglio'. This distinct sub-variety is often compared to the Pinot Noir of central Italy, unlike the more commonly grown Cesanese Comune clone, which is a workhorse variety that provides much of Rome's house wine.
The wine boasts a bouquet of perfumed red berries and dried roses, while the palate offers hints of earthiness, wild herbs, and aromatic spices. This unique, delightful, and complex wine will encourage a renewed appreciation for Cesanese!

About the Wine Maker
The Ciolli family have been growing Cesanese d’Affile for five generations on their estate, located 45 kilometres southeast of Rome. The young Damiano took over from his father at the age of 23, somewhat dismayed at the poor reputation of his region’s wines, yet encouraged by their precious old vines.
The vineyards, some more than 60 years old, are planted at 600 metres on mostly volcanic soil and are sheltered on three sides by the surrounding hills. The warm climate, characterised by rainy winters and sunny summers, with daily breezes from the Tyrrhenian sea create near perfect growing conditions.
