Dom Perignon Vintage 2013
The Wine
Dom Pérignon is exclusively a vintage champagne. Each vintage stands as a unique creation, expressing the character of the year and the essence of Dom Pérignon. With a minimum of eight years of cellar aging, the wine achieves the perfect balance known as Dom Pérignon's Plénitude of harmony. The 2013 vintage showcases a harmonious resonance between the pinot noirs and chardonnays, striking a balance between acidity and full-bodied flavor.
The winemaking year of 2013 marked a return to the celebrated tradition of late harvest vintages. Following a cold, wet winter and a gray, cool, and rainy spring, the vines budded roughly two weeks later than the decade's average, a delay that persisted until harvest. A hot, dry summer—the sunniest recorded in Champagne—was immensely beneficial for grape quality. Early September rains gave way to easterly winds, preserving the grapes' health until picking commenced on September 28 at Dom Pérignon. Tasting the vintage revealed an auspicious balance of acidity and richness.
The 2013 vintage's creation unveils a synergy between the pinot noirs and chardonnays, between acidity and full-bodied flavor. The bouquet is precise, elegant, and tactile, unfurling a delicate powdery aromatic weave of three nuances: citrus, vegetal, and spicy. This precision manifests a straightforward elegance, where the wine expands and blossoms post an ethereal introduction, leading to a sensation of pure clarity.
The nose delicately unfolds in layers of color: the green of eucalyptus, mint, and vetiver; the yellow-orange of mirabelle plums, apricot, and orange blossom; the brown of pepper, cardamom, and liquorice sticks; and finally, the silvery saline and toasted shades. The palate is graceful, epitomizing opulent simplicity and exactness.
98 Points James Suckling 'A driven and serious DP with aromas of chalk, biscuits, apricot stones and lemons. Some spice and dried flowers, too. So sleek and sophisticated. Elegant. Yet, it’s long and powerful, with a sharp minerality. Tight and precise. Reminds me of bottles from the 1980s, such as 1988. It really takes off. Disgorged October 2021. Drinkable on release in January 2023, but better in a couple of years. A DP for the cellar.'
