The Wine

We met with Raphael and Hannah at the Domaine in October 2022 - tasting from tank, barrel and bottles. We can attest to the quality and potential of this quality focused organic Domaine. They're the face of a new generation emerging in Champagne - cutting edge!

Coteaux Champenois red wines are crafted solely from Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier, with the AOC prescribing the precise grapes, volumes, yields, vinification methods, and ageing processes. This particular version is outstanding, reminiscent of a high-quality 1er Cru Burgundy upon first taste!

'Le Coteau' features 100% Pinot Noir grapes harvested from a small plot named "La Source" which faces due south, nestled at the end of a secluded valley. The vineyard's fortunate exposure allows temperatures to sometimes soar above 30 degrees in the summer, creating perfect conditions for producing still wines. The terrain's red soil offers excellent drainage, and the nearly 30-year-old Pinot vines originate from a classic Burgundian clone.

280 bottles produced.

About the Wine Maker

Domaine de Bichery is primarily a micro/artisanal Champagne House. It represents the relatively new venture of Raphael and Hannah Picconet, who launched their first production in 2015. Raphael Picconet, after holding various winemaking roles globally, returned in 2013 to his family's enterprise in the Cote des Bar. The family's vineyards are now divided between Domaine de Bichery and Raphael's brother, who runs a separate operation.

Their Champagnes feature on the lists of many of Europe's esteemed dining venues and fashionable wine bars. The Domaine possesses several old vine vineyards in the nearby regions of Neuville Sur Seine, Meurville, and Cote des Bar. The vineyards are planted with 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and a smaller portion of Pinot Meunier. Domaine de Bichery holds an organic certification from ECOCERT and also produces a limited quantity of Coteaux Champenois (still) wine.
