The Wine

100% Sangiovese - aged for18 months in old French oak.

'2021 is the single greatest young vintage I have ever tasted in Chianti Classico. Period. Full Stop.  The 2021s are majestic wines endowed with striking aromatics, layered fruit and all the energy that is such a signature of the appellation.
Antonio Galloni.

94 Pts, Antonio Galloni, Vinous 'The 2021 Chianti Classico is a classic wine from the estate, made in the restrained style that has become the norm here of late. There is plenty of richness from Panzano, but more energy and less heaviness than was the norm a few years ago. Giovanni Manetti and his team have given the Chianti Classico a wonderful sophistication. Spices, flowers, mocha and blue fruits linger, all wrapped in extremely fine tannins.'

94 Pts, Decanter 'Fontodi’s 2021 is a symbol of the exceptional quality of Chianti Classico at the Annata level. It exudes the wild, rugged and dry Tuscan landscape against a backdrop of dark, multi-layered fruit. Hints of coffee and liquorice mingle with concentrated black cherry and blackberry. With ripe, gravelly tannins, this wine shows the power of the vintage without being overbearing, retaining its charismatic energy. It’s worth waiting a few more months before drinking, but if cellared properly, it can easily impress for a decade.'

94 Pts, Wine Spectator 'This red wine combines the fruity and spicy side of Sangiovese and shows flavours of cherries and blackberries, accompanied by eucalyptus, juniper and wild rosemary. Lively and fluid, with tension in the complex, mineral aftertaste.'

About the Wine Maker

Fontodi Estate, located in Panzano at the heart of the Chianti Classico region, is one of the most renowned Chianti Classico producers. Owned by Giovanni Manetti, whose family acquired the estate in 1968, it boasts 70 hectares of biodynamic vineyards known as Conca-D’oro, or “golden shell,” named for its heat-retaining amphitheater shape ideal for ripening grapes. While organic vineyard practices date back to 1990, the first certified organic vintage was in 2008. The free-draining soils, called ‘galestro’ (a mix of schist rock, marl, and clay), are perfect for sangiovese.
