The Wine

A powerful fruit-laden Nebbiolo that lifts this wine to a new high. Dark plums and cherries, violets, dewy rose petals at dawn and a zephyr of melted tar fills the glass. A sensory joy. Gobs of black fruit fill the palate, and a cavalcade of fine, drying tannins escort the wine on a long and enjoyable journey.  As the vines mature this release is certainly worthy of Giaconda’s best Nebbiolo release to date. Giaconda

96 Pts Gary Walsh, The Wine Front 'Red cherry, a distinct almond paste character here, which I love, dried roses, a little spice, liquorice root, and above all, such perfume. It’s medium to full-bodied, red fruits and almond, some fragrant black tea, a distinctly ‘mineral’ feel to acidity gives it a finely etched feel, tannin has a pumice stone texture and grip, though while it’s assertive it sits very well in the wine. It’s quite stony too, and the finish is very long and precise, a subtle orange peel flavour in the aftertaste. Textbook Nebbiolo here. It’s superb. About the Wine Maker

Giaconda is one of Australia’s most famous names. The Beechworth winery was established by Rick Kinzbrunner in 1982. A mechanical engineer by training, he became interested in wine in the early 1970s and spent the next 10 years traveling to wine-growing regions to learn as much as possible. Rick was the first to establish a vineyard of any consequence in Beechworth when he first planted in 1982, Giaconda is best known for its Chardonnay, but also produces Shiraz and Pinot Noir. The wines here are hand-crafted by Rick and his son Nathan, who do everything themselves and only take on help at harvest. Some of the most desirable wines in Australia, and indeed the world, Giaconda’s wines are in regrettably short supply...BBR
