Giant Steps 'Sexton Vineyard' Pinot Noir 2023
The Wine
Established in 1997, Sexton Vineyard is perched on the north-facing inclines of the Warramate Ranges. The sparse topsoil and rocky clay subsoil naturally restrict crop yields, producing fruit with intense flavor and rich tannins. These conditions are ideal for the G5V15 Pinot Noir clone, which flourishes under the vineyard's warm and sunny climate.
The 2023 vintage was marked by a cool spring and a gentle growing season, culminating in one of the latest harvests in memory. This extended maturation period allowed the grapes to develop outstanding concentration and vibrant natural acidity. The grapes were handpicked and fermented, utilizing both whole bunches and destemmed berries, then aged for ten months in French oak barriques, with a quarter being new, to introduce nuanced complexity.
This Pinot Noir is robust and full of flavor, showcasing dark cherry and plum notes at the forefront, enhanced by undertones of sweet spices and firm, youthful tannins. The palate is bold and well-structured, with mature tannins suggesting a strong potential for aging.
97 points Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion ‘Aromas of kirsch, damson plums, licorice root and spices; this heady, concentrated wine has a lot of meat on the bones, with ripe, persistent tannins boding well for the future. A great contrast to the more delicate Giant Steps wines such as Bastard Hill and Primavera.’
