Le Carillon d Angelus 2016
The Wine
Carillon d’Angélus is the second wine from Château Angélus, one of Saint-Émilion’s most celebrated estates, now headed by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal. First produced in 1987, it comes from select plots on the cooler slopes and at the foot of the hill, where Merlot leads the blend, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted with the same care as the grand vin, it’s made using gravity-fed vinification, temperature-controlled wooden vats, and aged in French oak, usually with fewer new barrels to keep the fruit’s purity intact. Every vintage of Carillon shows its roots clearly, with aromas of dark berries and plum, accented by touches of graphite, cedar, and dried herbs. On the palate, it’s structured yet smooth, with fine tannins and a fresh lift that give it shape and length.
93 Pts Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, RobertParker.com 'The 2016 Le Carillon d'Angélus is blended of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, aged 16 months in 50% new French oak. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it strides confidently out of the glass with pure, polished black cherries, fresh blackberries and black raspberry scents with nuances of unsmoked cigars, hoisin, black truffles and wet stones plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has great elegance and sophistication, with the lively red and black fruit flavors adeptly structured with soft, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering earthy note.'
