Lucy M Sangiovese Nebbiolo 2025
nayuThe Wine
The Sangiovese (90%) comes from the Deanery, deep in the Piccadilly Valley. The site sits on red clay over sandstone on an east facing aspect at the bottom of a cold, deep valley, with VSP trellised, spur pruned vines. The Nebbiolo (10%) is from Brackenwood in Hope Forest, grown on deep red clay soils. The cool, dry finishing 2025 season gave both varieties fine structure & clarity.
The grapes were destemmed & wild fermented for 2 weeks in wooden fermenters & clay before being basket pressed. The Sangiovese was aged in oak & the Nebbiolo in glass demijohns, before the two were brought together. Unfiltered & bottled without additions.
A charming tribute to central Italy, with only 50 dozen bottles made. Sour cherry, blood orange, and dried herbs set the tone, while a touch of Nebbiolo brings rose petal elegance and a refined, firm tannin line. The palate is savoury, vibrant, and subtly serious, finishing with a lingering, gentle bitterness that begs for a meal. Picture slow-cooked ragù and an evening that stretches leisurely into the night.
A real Italo lookalike, pure as too!

About the Wine Maker
Anton van Klopper’s commitment to making wines without any additions and his unwavering, unapologetic attitude have made him a pinup boy of natural wine—not just in Australia, but internationally. His craft of natural wine is a straightforward exercise: it involves vinifying grapes, and grapes alone, without any additions whatsoever. Few debates in wine have been so charged or divisive but Anton’s approach remains on course.
Despite Anton’s wide renown, this is a super-small operation. The Lucy M vineyard and winery sit in the Basket Range, a picturesque pocket of the Adelaide Hills, where Anton also grows vegetables for The Summertown Aristologist—his nearby restaurant and cellar door (run together with Commune of Buttons). Anton also sources fruit from vineyards both in and around the Basket Range, which are rented and tended by him and his friend Jasper Button (all have gradually been converted to organic viticulture.)
