The Wine

Nestled side by side in the Polish Hill River, the vineyards of Martin and Joan Smith and Molloy showcase the best this Clare sub-region has to offer. The road to both, aptly named Blue Cutting Road, hints at their foundation—grey loam acid soils over sandstone and slate, with rocky topsoil that challenges the vines to thrive and yield quality fruit, while demanding careful work from the vigneron for perfect balance. Just nine kilometres from Watervale, Polish Hill River is cooler, with fruit ripening two to three weeks later; paired with its unique soil, this results in grapes with finesse and intensity. Here, it’s the slate underfoot, rather than Watervale’s limestone, that sets these wines apart.

Great example of aged Clare Riesling!

About the Wine Maker

O’Leary Walker Wines have been crafting premium, small-batch, hand-crafted wines from the Clare Valley for over two decades. In 2025, they proudly celebrate their 25th birthday – a milestone that reflects their enduring commitment to quality and passion for winemaking. Founded by David O’Leary and Nick Walker, and now joined by fourth-generation winemaker Jack Walker, the team has always embraced a philosophy of sourcing high-quality fruit from the region’s finest vineyards. The result is a portfolio of distinctive varietal wines that are both enjoyed by wine lovers and praised by critics, both in Australia and internationally. Their goal remains unchanged: to make great wines with character and balance – wines that cellar beautifully and continue to evolve with age.
