The Wine

Earthy, dark fruited and assertive. Our ode to some of Spains great wines and a sign of many more wines like this to come under the Renzaglia label.

Made with grapes grown by the pioneers of alternate varietals in NSW, Brian and Marcelle Freeman, based in the  Kingsvale, Hilltops.

The Tempranillo grapes make up 90% of the blend and were mechanically harvested on 21 March and underwent a whole berry fermentation inoculated by our house starter that we make up from Bella Luna grapes kicked off in the vineyard. Kept on skins for 1 month with intermittent plunging, the grapes were then basket pressed to tank for a light settling and sent to barrel, 1 new, 1 second use and the rest old.

The Graciano was 50% whole bunch on the bottom and the rest, crushed berries on top. Macerated gently for 10 days before being pressed to old oak.

All parcels were held in barrel for 6 months on heavy solids before a Spring racking and sulphur and another 4 months in those barrels on fine lees before we assembled the blend in tank. The assembled wine was held in tank for another 5 months before we bottled in September 24 without fining or filtration. Renzaglia

About the Wine Maker

Mark & Sandy Renzaglia took on the challenge of establishing a small vineyard in O’Connell Valley near Bathurst in 1997. There was no power, no town water, no neighbours growing grapes, just determination. Now their son Sam is on the hunt, taking Renzaglia Wines to the next level, seeking modern expressions from grapes sourced locally, and really pushing the conversation around responsible, sustainable, respectful farming in NSW. Renzaglia The family home, the Bella Luna Vineyard, and the winery are nestled in the rolling hills of the locality of O’Connell. It looks out over the O’Connell Valley to the north-east and further towards the Winburndale Nature Reserve, Mt Ovens and Mt Horrible. From this patch of dirt, the Renzaglia family have been tending to two acres of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot since 1997. Recent plantings of Tempranillo, Grenache, Shiraz, Viognier, and Chardonnay were added to the mix in 2020, plus Sangiovese this year.
