This organically grown barrel selection comes from four Central Otago vineyards – The Fusilier in Bannockburn, First Paddock in Gibbston, and both Last Chance and Red Bank in Alexandra. These small, high-density sites feature a variety of clones, cropped to under 5 tonnes per hectare, with most vineyard work done by hand. It’s a classic Central Otago style that will only get better with time in the bottle.
95 Pts Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion 'An organically grown, barrel selection of four Central Otago vineyards - The Fusilier in Bannockburn, First Paddock in Gibbston, Last Chance and Red Bank in Alexandra. Mid-ruby in the glass, there’s some lovely whiffy struck match reduction on the nose here, twitching through the wild strawberry, macerated raspberry and red and dark cherry fruits. Sinewy with a stony, fine-tannin chew, layers of exotic spice, light game tones and an earthy flow as the wine trails with a bright, minerally cadence, powering it forward; this is great drinking. 13% alc. Drink: 2026 - 2041. Screwcap'
94 Pts Cam Douglas MS, camdouglasms.com 'From four vineyard sites this wine is the flagship and delivers. Aromas of equal parts dark berries and skin, savoury wild spices and oak. Dry, taut, focused and fleshy, an abundance of texture from tannins and acidity framing core fruit flavours of dark plum and boysenberry, raspberry and blackcurrant moments. Violet and wild rose. Excellent'

About the Wine Maker
Actor, writer and farmer - Sam Neill was also one of the earliest Central Otago winegrowers, planting his original 5-hectare vineyard, The First Paddock, at Gibbston in 1993. After the first vintage release in 1997, Sam aspired to “have small footprints in camps of excellence throughout the region” and planted 2 further sites; Red Bank Farm and Last Chance, both in Alexandra. Finally, in 2013, Sam bought ‘The Fusilier’, an established vineyard on Felton Rd, Bannockburn. Winemaker, Dean Shaw, has been with Sam since 1998 and crafts a stunning family of estate grown, certified organic wines that are renowned for understated precision and finesse. BioGroNZ #4816
