The Wine

100% Nebbiolo from the marvellous 2019 vintage!

17.5 Pts Walter Speller (Jancis Robinson) 'Pale ruby. A compelling sweet-raspberry, sour-cherry nose mingling with complex, sweet oak and with hints of fresh mint. Fragrant, long and elegant, while the sappy fruit is still a little marked by the oak, and bags of powdery tannins on the finish. Such amazing elegance for a Ghemme! Deceptively light of touch, but this needs food. A stunning Ghemme.'

95 Pts Lisa Cardelli, The Wine Pilot 'Glossy black cherries and Japanese plums takes the central stage here, conveying an exotic oak garment (older barrels), sandalwood, cedar and a touch of cinnamon. It takes a while before showing the provenance and fruit profile. Sappy, soft-grainy tannins hug the multi-layered palate. It’s a moreish and alluring Ghemme with an English accent.'

About the Wine Maker

Guido is a meticulous winemaker, believing the smallest of things in the cellar & vineyard make a significant difference the final wine.  He produces just three cuvees two under screwcap & his flagship Ghemme under cork. All the wines (which are fresh, very mineral & have the utmost purity.

All the wines emanate from vineyards planted on fluvio-glacial soils predominantly in Ghemme but also in neighbouring Sizzano. Both terroirs have the presence of different elements & minerals coming down from Monte Rosa thousands of years ago.

The wines have been the subject of incredible critical reviews from Walter Speller (Jancis Robinson), particularly given their relatively modest price points.  Vigeneti Costacurta is a star on the rise in Piedmont.

Walter Speller writes of Costacurta 'Ex Optimis Uvis Optimum Vinum, which loosely translates into: from great grapes comes great wine. I love the confidence of the motto and it is not misplaced at all, which you realise as soon as this wine comes under your nose.'
