The Wine

WCH have a number of sites from which to select their Pinot Noir grapes; for the 2024 release it is mostly from our Langton & Karri Oak vineyards (Mt Barker) with a small amount from Porongurup, a slightly cooler site. All are planted to a number of clones and, with the vines now reaching 20+ years of maturity, they are proving well suited to the cooler aspects within these vineyards.

2024 was brutally hot and dry, it was also the earliest vintage on record. Even with the fruit all coming from the cooler sites on our Mt Barker Vineyards being so dry there was no disease pressure allowing the fruit to ripen and give more of that plush end of the spectrum we love with good structure and a great tannin profile.

This is a well weighted Pinot with loads of generous, bright, sweet fruit flavours. The palate is silky, rich and robust with exotic red berry characters, eg cranberries and pomegranate. These delicious fruit flavours are nicely balanced by the gently drying tannins and there’s the subtle influence from the oak maturation (20% in new French oak).

Delicious to enjoy now or cellar for a couple of years for extra bottle age complexity.

About the Wine Maker

West Cape Howe’s driving philosophy is to make delicious wines with flavour, structure and balance; wines that people love to drink! Established in 1997 it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unequalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern region has to offer. The five sub-regions range from inland continental conditions - ideal for fine Riesling and cool Shiraz; to coastal maritime conditions; ideal for elegant Chardonnay and classy Cabernet.
