The Cote du Py is a special place, near the village of Morgon in Beaujolais. Jean Foillard’s Cote du Py is as pure and captivating as Beaujolais gets. One of the iconic wines of contemporary France. The Cote du Py of Morgon is one of Beaujolais’ great vineyards and certainly its best known and Foillard is undoubtedly the master of the site. No one renders it with equal clarity, complexity or textural beauty. It's the highest elevated plot sitting on an extinct volcano whereby black hardened soils are known to produce structured, age-worthy reds which are both complex and much more expressive than what you might expect from Beaujolais. The soils are schist and granite, with some vines up to 90 years old (mixed with younger vines too).
The 2024 vintage is impressive — a classic Beaujolais, unlike some of the richer recent years. It’s shaping up as an ‘old school’ vintage in the best sense, bringing back freshness and finesse after a stretch of riper, more “solar” seasons. Kermit Lynch compares it to an acoustic set rather than a full stadium show, offering less overt power and concentration but plenty of charm, elegance, and precision. The wines burst with vivid red fruit — cherry, strawberry, raspberry — accented by violet and floral notes, vibrant acidity, and silky, delicate tannins, making them immediately juicy and drinkable while maintaining pure expression.
