The Wine

This unique rose blends 80% Malvasia Nera with 20% Merlot, offering inviting aromas of wild strawberries, red berries, and floral hints of violet and hibiscus. Subtle notes of white pepper and Mediterranean herbs add depth, while the palate is fresh and flavorful with a rustic edge. After 18 months in oak and chestnut barrels and another six in the bottle, it strikes a harmonious balance between fruitiness and spice, making it both easy to enjoy now and promising for future aging.

About the Wine Maker

Massa Vecchia is located in the municipality of Massa Marittima, on the Metalliferous Hills of the upper Maremma in Tuscany. Established in 1985 from a vineyard planted in 1972 with Sangiovese and Trebbiano, the estate spans just 3.6 hectares of vines, along with 1.5 hectares of olive trees and 0.8 hectares of wheat. Founded by Fabrizio Niccolaini and his wife, Patrizia Bartolini, this renowned estate produces only about 15,000 bottles of wine each year, making them highly sought after. Most of the vineyard work is done by hand and without chemicals, using only sulphur and Bordeaux mixture. Every effort goes into keeping the plants in top health to draw the most from the soil and the vintage. In the cellar, vinification takes place in open oak and chestnut vats, with maceration lasting 2–3 weeks for both whites and reds. The wine is unfiltered and aged in old barrels to avoid imparting wood flavors. Sulphur dioxide is generally avoided, except for a small amount at bottling for some wines, and certain labels have no added sulphur. These wines are made for aging and are best enjoyed on special occasions once their tannic structure has softened.
