Mengoba Bierzo Brezo Mencia 2023
The Wine
93 Pts, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate Magazine "The fruit-driven 2023 Brezo Mencía is elegant and fine-boned. This is juicy, primary and tender, expressive, clean and balanced, with a nice mixture of wild berries and herbs, licorice and a fine thread in the palate. It's serious but approachable. It has complexity and balance. This is a superb unoaked Bierzo red.''

About the Wine Maker
Bordeaux-born winemaker Grégory Pérez founded Mengoba in Bierzo in 2007, bringing experience from renowned estates such as Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Cos d’Estournel. His vineyards, clustered around the mountain village of Espanillo at elevations above 800 metres, thrive on a mix of decomposed slate and clay soils. Pérez farms with a deep respect for the land—eschewing herbicides, using only organic fertilisers, encouraging biodiversity, and maintaining very low yields. Many of the vines are head‑trained and include parcels up to 80 years old, all planted to indigenous varieties, with Mencía and Godello at the heart of the estate. In the cellar, he works with stainless steel, amphorae, and a range of wooden vessels to craft both blends and varietal wines across a thoughtful, expressive range.
