The Wine

An attractive, deep ruby red, the wine has a highly complex nose which opens up with airing on notes of black berry fruit such as bilberry and blackberry. Fresh and well-balanced on the palate, it is full-bodied and displays attractively complex flavors, especially black fruit, with a touch of oak. A wine with good ageing potential, its well-integrated and silky tannins give it a remarkable finish.

Blend: 79.5% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.5% Cabernet Franc

93 Points Wine Enthusiast "At this stage, this wine is all about the tannins that dominate the black fruits. But fruit weight is there, promising good things as the wine matures. Smoky wood and blackberry flavors are set against a solid structure. There is potential here, so let the wine soften and mature. Drink from 2024."

91 Points James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2019 "A very nicely integrated wine with attractive blue fruit and slate-like, savory elements, offering a complete impression on both nose and palate. Drink or hold."

88-90 Points Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (230), April 2017 "The 2016 De Sales offers quite generous black cherries and cassis aromas on the nose, a little simplistic compared to those Pomerol estates up on the plateau, but clean and pure. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is smooth on the entry with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, a gentle grip towards the finish and a dab of truffle lingering on the aftertaste. This is a fine Château de Sales that should give 10-15 years of drinking pleasure."

About the Wine Maker

This estate has been family owned for almost five centuries – an exception indeed in the Bordeaux region. De Sales has been passed down from generation to generation ever since the 16th century, when it was acquired by the Sauvanelle family. Since 1578, Château de Sales has seen four different families: the Sauvanelles, the Desaigues, the de Laages and currently the Lamberts (direct descendants of the Sauvanelles), the changes in name occuring when the estate was passed down through the women of the family.
